how far coercive method may increase the efficiency in an organization?

Coercive method?

What is coercive method actually? It is a method that use force to the employee.

When we talk about force, of course it will involve the employer that misuse the power and of course it shows that the employer is really mean. Such a bad employer!

Honestly, we think using coercive method is ineffective.

In an organization, for sure the employer is the one who possesing it and will implement towards all of the staff. He or she may think that this is the best way to force the staff to do their job.

In a short term, yes.. It might be the best method to increase the efficiency in an organization. The staff may run their duty effectively and this situation may lead to the efficiency in an organization. But, for a long term, we don't think this is a good idea.

It's like the employer is teaching the children. The staff are not kid anymore and the employer don't have to force them to do the job. They know their own responsibility in that organization.

If the employer feels that the staff are not efficient enough, just fired him/her. Don't waste your time to use coercive method.

If you are the employee, maybe you still obey the order at the beginning but after a long time you will feel disatisfaction towards the job itself and the employer because you feel unmotivated when the employer do such damn thing to you and your job and of course that will lead to the inefficiency and ineffectiveness in an organization.

hello there....
Interesting topic to be discuss...

We totally agree with your answer. The employer should not practiced the coercive power to their employees because it will create frustrations and dissatisfactions among the employees.

In order to create harmonious in organization, the employer should give support and give motivation to their employees to increase their performance.

Do you agree with us???

My question:
Why using force can be regarded as misuse of power?

When I force you to do assignment, am I misused my power?

When I force you to wear in such manner, am I misused my power?

Hope for some explanation there.

Another point that boggling me, how would you operationalized the 'coercive'?

Is coercive means to ask the employee to do job that is not describe in their job description? e.g: to ask your PA to go out and buy you breakfast?

OR

Is coercive means demanding your employee to do more than they could?

Somehow, I do believe coercive method bears some efficiency in works which later can creates one healthy culture

e.g.:
You know I'm a strict lecturer that happily misuse her power to coerce the students to do something. Thus, when you happen to be my students, you change yourself - from the lazy and couldn't be bother enough, to someone who come to class very much prepared ...

don't you think that's effective?

my 2 cents

our explanation regarding to your comment..
1)Why using force can be regarded as misuse of power?
In our opinion, using force can be regarded as unnecessary implementation of power, either not at the right place or time. Unnecessary implementation of power means that if the employer can negotiate or use his discretionary power, prefer use this compare to the force.
2) When I force you to do assignment, am I misused my power?
nooooooo. There are certain differences between employer and lecturer, student and employee. Being a student, we need to follow all the rules and regulations because it is for our own sake. Lecturer is the one who give the knowledge to the student and of course if the student did not follow, it will give bad effect to the student. While for the employee, he or she must do their job because they are working in the organization and they MUST know their responsibility and they are paid to the job that had been accomplished.

Well, I think your response is kind of paradox ... since I don't really see the real contextual differences between lecturer vs. student, and employer vs. employee.

Actually, the operative word here is efficiency.

As I prefer to see faster result in shorter time, I vote for coercion method if things doesn't work well. After all, to use coercion method is kind of manager's discretionary power, too..

ok..i absltely agree with u all..k,but from my perception, the coercive method cant be as a tool 2 measure the uneffctve work by the employee cz its also depand on theirself actually.its only 4 ensure that the workers follow the guidelines that had been set up by organization..
its only from my perception..k

well, coercive method can be very subjective dough..it may lead to more efficient work or it may also lead to a higher frustration.. it depends on the individuals actually on how they see the result of the method will be..but overall, well done!your explanation is easy to understand and you make your opinion very clear..nicely done!
