In what condition the brainstorming technique may works effectively?

Brainstorming is an effective technique from group creativity in giving idea to solve problem. It is a little more effective than working independently as an individual. It generates from the ideas and thoughts that can be change and improve into useful ideas.

First, when there is a conflict in the group. By having conflicts in the group there shall be more effective ideas and solutions to solve the problem occur. Conflict is divided into two which are the functional conflict and dysfunctional conflict. Dysfunctional conflict is not bring any good to the group as they are unhealthy conflicts. For example, a husband and wife can't get along and fight all the time and blame the youngest child for all their troubles by saying "If it weren't for him, we'd all be a happy family!". Functional conflicts are the good conflict as it gives increment of effectiveness of the group. For instance, a family sits down and argues about the pros and cons of going to the beach for summer vacation. They have planned on going to the mountains. So from the above examples, functional conflict may bring to the effective brainstorming.

Second, when there is assessments or group projects. This happens when the group is given tasks to be completed. They will sit together and discuss the effective ideas for the given tasks. The members of the group will give ideas in order to solve the problems of the tasks. When they want the task to be completed perfectly, they will tend to develope more ideas then they usually do. For example, group A is given a task to complete within a long period of time. The group members will sit together frequently and discuss the best solutions to get more ideas to complete the task.

Third, when the group or individuals are forced to give answers or ideas. Each members of the group will find it tense in the situation when they are forced to give answers or ideas. They will automatically developed the brainstorming technique where they sit together and gives as many ideas as they can. There will be no critics in the idea given. But, at the end of the dicussion, the best idea will be selected. For instance, Lecturer A gives only five minutes to each group to develope answers in the question given. Each members of the group will sit together and develope the best answers.

As a conclusion, brainstorming technique is the best method to be used in any situation.=).

An individual tend to take more risky decision when in the group compared when they are alone…..

Miss,this is our answer+opinion..

GROUP VS. THE INDIVIDUAL

Decision making groups may be widely use in organizations, individual and group decisions each have their own set of strength. Neither is ideal for all situations.

In group, we can find information, knowledge, increase create any idea or creativity in a group with more completely. That automatically can interact and interdependent together to achieve goal.

Besides that, a group will increased acceptance of a solution. People are more likely to accept and encourage other to accept the decision when they participate in the decision itself. This translates into more support for the decision and higher satisfaction among these required to implement it.
Then, group decision can increase diversity of view. In this scope, that increased in input from group members to the decision making. This will open up the opportunity for more approaches and alternatives to be considered.

(+) In our opinion, making decision in the group is much better than alone. when we are in the group, we will feel strong because have a back up in our back. In term of making decision, in group, we not afraid to making any decision because the members of our group automatically will support our idea or decision that has been make.
Furthermore, when we are in group, it will make us more confident to make any decision. That because, with group supporter we will able to take any risk because if the result it was bad, we had to take it together meanwhile making decision alone, we have to accept the burden or responsibility alone…

Lastly, each opinion in group must be discussed with other members to get higher quality decisions. The decision must be agreed by other. That important in avoid them to have ‘war and conflict’ with each other….

Assalamualaikum.. and a very good day to all....

our group members are, Juwaini, Ross Ainura, Tengku Halinda, Jihadi, Asrul, Samsul, and Ridzuan (AMD5PD)
okay......it seems that this is our first time in doing assignment through blog. thanks to miss fisha..hak2. our group's topis is 'can disfunctional conflict be changed into functional conflict'..if anyone knows the answer, raise up your hand!
. . . . . . . . .?
ok..no hands here..its ok..we'll try to give the answer..sounds smart huh? well...WE ARE SMART!!muahahahaha..okay..lets get serious..

firstly, of course, the definition. functional conflict is a conflict that support the goals of the group and improve performance. you see guys, the meaning is, it can be a motivation for an individual in organization who facing conflict, and it will result to the increment of efficiency, effectiveness, and the credibility of that particular employee. then it will reflect to the productivity of that organization.

alright, another type of conflict is dsyfunctional of conflict. this kind of conflict is different with the above conflict as we stated. it might contribute to a bad group performance. if anyone here who is working is having disfunctional conflict, well..you know better. of course it will hinder your group performance.

okay..lets go back to the question..the answer is yes, it can.how? wanna know? dont worry, we will give you guys the answer.

okay...a group member may percieve an action as dysfunctional, in that the outcome is personally dissatisfying to him or her.however, for our analysis, that action is personally would be functional if it furthers the objectives of the group.
next method,guess what?hoho...

to make a dysfunctional conflict to be a functional conflict, we have go to the 5 steps of conflict process. which is; first stage:potential opposition or incompability.in this stage, all sorts of things such as the responsibilities, goals, style of leadership, and also the personal issues will be counter. this is to make sure the conflict will be reduce by solving the matter using few method, such as avoidence, copromise and so on..
we have gone through two methods, so far..alright, now is..hmm.. next stage, which is the cognition and personalization. in stage 1 before, it negatively affect something that one party cares about, then the potential for opposition or incompability becomes actualized in the second stage. the antecedent conditions acan only lead to conflict when one or more of the parties are affected. okay..sounds hard to understand..but what we are tring to say is that, this is where the conflict will be issued tend to be defined. ha..now you understand huh..

the next stage is intentions. this is between people's perceptions and emotions and their evident behavior. these intentions are decisions to act in a given way.in thsi stage there will be the methos that commonly use to solve conflict such as the competing, avoiding, collaborating, accomodating, compromising and smooting...etc..

last stage is the outcomes. the action-reaction interplay between the conflicting parties results in consequenses. outcomes may be functional, in that the conflict results in an iprovement in the group's performance, or dysfunctional, in taht it hinders group performance.
okay,okay...we're done now..so for the conclusion,we want to ask you guys a question, instead of just giving a statement.ehemm,,,do you guys want a discussion to be end up like this;
or...like this;...?

phew..finish at last..now..what do you think of what we said above? do you agree? or disagree? or do you have any opinion about it? you do, don't cha?
well, guess that if you could give feedback to us, then we would know what do you guys really think about the topic..
anyway...goodbye for now..chow..

Assalamualaikum..

We are from Group Pistachio For Brain (AMD5PD).
Our members are Khairunnisa Ismail, Farah Syuhada, Safuhah, Mohd Fazree Zulhilmi, Wan Mohd Aimi and Mohd Shahdan.

The question given is: What the employer should do to create stress-free environment? Discuss?

Our answers are....jeng...jeng...jeng...

A good and condusive working environment is very vital for the employees, employers and the whole organization in order to perform well and enhance their work performance to achieve organization's goals.

In order to achieve the goals, there are several conditions to be considered. One of the most condition that should be consider is the employer roles and responsibilities towards the employees to avoid and prevent stress from occur in the workplace. For that, the employers should take appropriate methods or actions to create stress-free environment.

The first criteria that should be concerned is in term of workload. The employer should be divide the workload carefully to the employees by following their functions and level of responsibilities in the organization. For many employees, they feel that having too much work to do and not have enough time to complete the work can be stressful.

Let's move to the second criteria to be consider by the employer that is in term of job condition. The employer must ensure that office temperature is suitable that means not too hot or too cold for the employees, suitable lightning, appropriate and comfortable office layout for employees easy to move, prohibit loud noise, well-equipped of office facilities and technology advancement such as computers, telephones, internet connection and so on.

The third criteria is about career development. This criteria also must be put in priority to avoid stress from happen. The employer has to concerned about job security of the employees due to the reorganizing or down-sizing. In term of promotion, transfer and development opportunities, the employer should follow the organization policy and guidelines based on the qualifications, experiences and suitable reasons given by the employees. The employer cannot simply do it based on favouritism, nepotism or without follow the guidelines. If it happens, there will exist a sense of unsatisfied, unfair and disagreement to others employees.

The fourth criteria is interpersonal relations. It means the relationship between employers and employees and relationship between employees and their collegues. It is said that when relationship among each others is poor, then it can be stressful. So, it is important to the employer to be nice, polite, friendly and fair to the employees without care about their age, religion, races, status and etc. It will create a stress-free environment.

In a nutshell, if the employer fulfil all the criterias as stated above, it will lead to a stress-free environment in the working place. Employees will be more high-spirit, relaxed, inspired and enjoy doing their works.

That's all from us. Hope that our entry will get good feedbacks or comments from other groups.
Thank you very much.

My Note

Scrolling the whole comments you made to each other, I sensed something unpleasant.

Some of the comments like targeting at personal issue which totally unacceptable here. Don't use "character assassination" because we are not practising politicized culture here.

For that matter, if I sense any statements that in any way sound like "character assassination" or personal assault in your comments, the group will be penalized (marks deduction is a must).

Please discuss in very 'civilized' manner - even though I did say and advocated cynical, provocative, you don't have to go that far ... No point of accusing the other group's English is bad when you also never be better than them.

Differences in opinion is welcomed. But, to attack personal differences is an absurd!

This has to be stopped. Do I make myself clear now?

fabulousAMDP5C prESeNTIng........

Question:What are two major disadvantages of group decision making? Why you say so?

So below is the answer.

Basically, a group can be defined as a group where is two or more people who interact and influence one another. This definition was given by Shaw (1981)

Decision making is a conscious process of making choices among one or more alternatives with the intention of moving towards some desire state of affairs.

Group decision making defined as the process of developing and analyzing alternatives and making a choice.

There are many disadvantages of group decision making. It includes time consuming, conformity pressures in groups, dominated by one or a few members and ambiguous responsibility. The two major disadvantages are time consuming and
conformity pressures in groups.

Group decision making can be time consuming. It is because, longer time needed to evaluate and choose the best options exist. Meaning to say, when we are in a group, we have a various kind of viewpoints that is relevant and brilliant. So, it takes time to choose the best options among the available options and this is how group decision making can be time consuming. For example to choose a leader. The first step is to list down the entire eligible leader. Then, group members will vote for the leader that they found qualified for the title. During this process, more time needed for the voters to make decision which candidates that is the best to choose for the title. Once the voters voted, the votes will be counted to identify who win the title. All these process shows that there is time consuming for a group decision making.

The next major disadvantage of group decision making is, conformity pressures in groups. Conformity here includes compliance, identification and also internalization. When people conform in spite of their own beliefs and preference, they are prescribes to compliance conformity. When people conform when they respect or are attracted to others who support a particular action they are subjected to identification conformity while, in internalization, when people accept requests or orders because they are consistent with their beliefs and values, and influence is successful because the desired behavior is intrinsically rewarding to them. For example, in choosing plan. In some condition, one group has more than one good plan to run. The members within the group have differences choice of plan. Meaning to say, some choose plan A, while some choose plan B or C. So it becomes a pressure for those who choose the plan that have not been the majorities of the members.

In conclusion we can say that every decision made by the member of organization must have the advantages and disadvantages, it is hard to satisfy everybody. All we can do to avoid this thing happen by doing controlling mechanism on the decision making made by the group leader.

wonder_gurlz! amd5pc

Can you eliminate politic in the organization? why you say so?

Eliminate politic? Why not? But surely it will take such a long period to fully eliminate all the political games in the organization.

First, why do we say it can be eliminate?
Well, nothing is impossible!!! We believe the effort you give will determine the affect. Special attention to all leaders:you need to have the guts and enough determination to eliminate the political influence, if not, shame on you..... Ooops! what a harsh statement we made!! But yet, it IS the truth..think deeply....

Second
, why is it hard to change? in our view, it is simply because the political games have become part of our culture. The political influence is everywhere and suprisingly, it has been accepted by our society!simple example, certain parents(or most of them we could say) will use their strong cultivating network in order to register their children to enter elit or prestigious school. What do you think the effect will be? It will set the mentality of the children to referit as an acceptable action and it will continuously practice by the next generation. Thus, it become a culture!culture produce mentality!! duhh..

Back to the culture and mentality again!hence, to change the culture you must dare to go against the flow and change the mentality! So,lu pikirla sendiri!!!!kuang..kuang..kuang..

If the environment is stronger determinant of personality, how would you explain the bad behavior among those who living in the same shared environment?

So, what do you think?? Let’s begin our discussion…

Based on the question, the environment is stronger determinant of the personality which is it can lead to bad behavior among those who living in the same shared of environment. It is because the environment plays a more important role than the inherited factors of our personality. The environment factors include our family, culture, group membership and also life experience.

In terms of family, actually both parent and siblings are playing important roles in the personal development of most individual member of extended also can influence personality formation which is it can lead to bad behavior or other.

In terms of family, the influences to the each individual personality happen in three implications ways. First is through their own behavior. The parents present the situations that bring out certain behaviors in children. For example, in the past, the father involved in criminal cases, and possibility their children to be influenced through the history are high. Second, their children are influenced by their parents because they think that their parents as a role model for them. For example, the father smokes in front of their children, so it will influence the children to follow their father’s behavior. Lastly is they selectively reward and punish certain behavior. For example, the children commit a mistake such as fighting at the school, but when their parents know about this, they still do not taking any action such as give any punishment.

The other environment factor of personality determinant is culture. Culture is found in what Lery-Bruhl described as ‘collective representations’ that the belief and the values which are the unquestioned basic assumptions upon which rational arguments in that society are founded.

Culture also can influence our behavior which is towards our personality. It depends on the culture at our environment. People were born in a particular society or exposed to family societal values and to norms of acceptable behavior. For example, we are Malays and we living in Chinese neighborhood. When the majority of the neighborhoods are Chinese, we will be influenced to follow their culture like gamble, drink and many more. However, they will not follow our culture too much because of we are not the majority at that place.

So, we think actually it depends on ourselves to control and try to familiarized in our environment.

how far coercive method may increase the efficiency in an organization?

Coercive method?

What is coercive method actually? It is a method that use force to the employee.

When we talk about force, of course it will involve the employer that misuse the power and of course it shows that the employer is really mean. Such a bad employer!

Honestly, we think using coercive method is ineffective.

In an organization, for sure the employer is the one who possesing it and will implement towards all of the staff. He or she may think that this is the best way to force the staff to do their job.

In a short term, yes.. It might be the best method to increase the efficiency in an organization. The staff may run their duty effectively and this situation may lead to the efficiency in an organization. But, for a long term, we don't think this is a good idea.

It's like the employer is teaching the children. The staff are not kid anymore and the employer don't have to force them to do the job. They know their own responsibility in that organization.

If the employer feels that the staff are not efficient enough, just fired him/her. Don't waste your time to use coercive method.

If you are the employee, maybe you still obey the order at the beginning but after a long time you will feel disatisfaction towards the job itself and the employer because you feel unmotivated when the employer do such damn thing to you and your job and of course that will lead to the inefficiency and ineffectiveness in an organization.

name_what??? (amd5pc) presenting the hardcore work....

First thing first, among other groups in our class, fortunately we got the long-version question..and we felt so lucky to be the one who answered it..huhuhu(",)

We got question from chapter 9: Organizational Culture. The question was:

"A growing number of Malaysian works for foreign owned firms in Malaysia. Do you think that these employees are being influenced by the approach to the management and culture of the country that owns the firm? Why and how?

According to the question, we understand that there are a lot of Malaysians works in the foreign firms in Malaysia. The factor that influenced Malaysians to work in that firms is because they were influenced by the approach and culture of the country that owns the firm.

The easiest way to understand this question is from the example below.

The example we can see from the company of Jaya Jusco Stores Sdn. Bhd. The company is come from Japan and they practise the culture of Japan even in Malaysia. For instance, every morning the staff will gather with the top management for daily briefing before they start their work. Usually as a symbol of respect to the top management and company they will make a bow same as the culture that practise in Japan. Other than that, every morning they will start their work along with the fast-beat Japan song as to increase the work spirit among the workers. That's why we think the Malaysians get influenced to work in the foreign firms because of their unique culture practised. The culture and approach practise are totally different from the local firm in Malaysia. The culture will affects the behavior of the workers to be more disciplined.

That's all we can answer now. If God's will, we will try to make the sequel. Yang baik itu datangnya dari Allah dan yang buruk itu datangnya dari diri kami sendiri('',)... we already did our best and hope everybody satisfy with it.. Wassalam..

If there are political problem where in the organization would you must expect to find them? Why you say so?

Recently, political problem always happened in the organization. We choose Human Resources Department as the example of the organization that faced the political problem in the organization.

Why we choose this department?

Mostly, this department deal with all the staff in the organization and also deal with the outsiders in term of many aspect which are recruitment, promotion, termination, allocation the resources and provide better condition and facilities during the organizational process.

Promotion is one of the situation that we choose that usually facing with the political problem in the organization. There are several type of political problem. Firstly, blaming and attacking others. This happened when one party has intention and take improper action to prohibit another party from getting the promotion. For example, create information that can demolish his or her career and lower reputation.

Second, cultivating network which means cultivating social relationship with others to accomplish one goals. In order to fulfill the interest need for his self middle manager use his good relationship with top management to achieve his target. There are willing to use any kind of way or method without concern another staff such as, the staff in the middle management position use "cable" to get the higher position in top management level.

All in all, we can see the political problem that arise in this department cannot be eliminated. It depends on the department to find the better solution in order to measure these problems.

The NamelesS (AMD5PB)

Politics is to be said tactic of the weak. Do you agree or not? Why?

Basically we agree with the statement given “Politics is to be said tactic of the weak” it is because, the one who always use this kind of tactic actually want to hide the weakness of themselves.

As we know, politics can always be associated with power so, the one who always wanted to have power are those who are weak. Because, by having a power they can hide the weakness of themselves, moreover, by having a power also, it can help to protect them. In other word, if someone is good and great enough they will not use this kind of tactic, because they can stand by their on feet.

For example, Ali always acts like he is great and oftenly use to manipulate others, as a result a lot of people like him and become his follower.

Next point is, to get influence from others. Basically, these kinds of people not only want to hide themselves but, they also want to get influence and make a link with others. It is because, once they’ve got influence from others it become easier for them to gain or gain anything’s that they desire. Moreover, this kind people will make a link with someone that usually can give benefit for them. For example, in the recruitment process if they have a ‘cable’ or ‘link’ in that particular organization it become easier for them to enter to that organization.

As a conclusion, we can see that people, who always use this politic tactics or games, are the one who are weak because they actually want to hide the weakness of themselves and want to gain something in much easiest way (short-cut).

Our ChickenSoup (5B) Serving ...

The issue given is = Do we need to consider personality in recruiting the new workers? Why you say so?

Our group totally agrees that we should consider personality in recruiting the new workers.

This is because personality as the first impression if individual and organization. For example, the workers who possess high Machiavellianism personality they actually have high self-esteem and self confidence.

In order to recruit a worker based on his or her personality, we should be able to identify whether they have high Machiavellianism. Normally people will possesses high level of Machiavellianism in order to get what they want because they have high self-esteem and self confidence during the interview session.

Good personality will be displayed through attitude in all situations. For example, the people who have high self-monitoring are quite rare sensitive to external cues and can behave differently in different situation. For the person who has high self-monitoring, they can easily suit to with any situation and person, so that the people will feel comfortable with them. In addition, this kind of person also can increase the interest of client when dealing with them.

As the conclusion, we should know how to determine the individual personality in order to recruit new employment.

My note

First: Come on guys … your answer sound too serious … seriously!

Well, I’m not advocating SMS lingo kind of answer, but it is advisable if you can infuse some humour element or anything you can think of. Your answer doesn’t have to be like this … or, otherwise we just resort to the conventional textbook.

One thing should be noted, even though your answer is an entry for this blog, it doesn’t necessarily this short. Well, if you’re thinking of making another “sequel” entry, then fine with me. But, if the answers just like this, how on earth I’m going to pick the best entry ever? May be my secret reward doesn’t sound interesting enough for you I guess.

Ok, may be you’re bit confused on how this thing works. Let me enlighten you.

The winwin_fcgroup wrote …

Firstly, we consider gays and lesbians part of diversity in workforce because for us, we can't discriminate these kind of people if they have highly skills and experiences. That is their personal matters. As long as they good in doing the task and not interrupt others on their workplace, we must accept them.

You know what …. Booo! It’s boring! Such cold, emotionless and stoic statement coming from such fun young people. Instead, you may write this way … [this is copyright protected. Any repetition or such without prior permission from me will cost you marks!]

Gays and lesbians? Such a nice diversity we must say. Well, who cares for their sex orientation if they can give excellent output to the organization. Way to go guys!

Err, we are not advocating such thing though, mind you. But, diversity makes us prosper in so many ways – experience, lifestyle and so on. After all, it’s all about choices people make throughout their life. Stop judging people because when you’re busy judging others, then you’ll miss so many interesting things. They may be bad because of their sexual orientation. But, does this makes you any better than them only if you choose to love someone with ‘normal sex orientation’? We are sick to death with this 'holier than thou' attitude!

So, what do you think? Get the ideas?

Remember, I’m not looking for the right or wrong answer … but more into what do you really think. Be honest and blurt everything you want to say. Be provocative. Cynical if you must. But, one thing to be observed – know you limit – if you know what I mean. You may offend others, but you also must ready to be offended. After all, this is blog culture, right? Say what the things you want to say. If they like it, they’ll continue to read it. If not, they got myriad of choices.

Winwin_fcgroup – kudos for being the first to post … but … please consider revising back your answer. I’m expecting something fun, bold and out-of-the-world answer from you.

Good luck.

Have a nice day!

hye readers.. we are winwin_fcgroup(amd5pb)

We are responsible to answer this question.."Do you consider gays and lesbians part of diversity in workforce? How you response to this?"

Actually, we pointed out two major points towards this issue :

Firstly, we consider gays and lesbians part of diversity in workforce because for us, we can't discriminate these kind of people if they have highly skills and experiences. That is their personal matters. As long as they good in doing the task and not interrupt others on their workplace, we must accept them.

Secondly, for those who are not accept them as the workforce diversity, we think they simply narrow their mind without widely open on other aspects. Maybe they have their own reason why they choose to become a gay or lesbian in their life. Who knows?? Although in Islam, we as the Muslim should advise them to the right path. If a person has done their responsibility, then it depends on that particular person whether to change or not.

So to make it in brief, we should consider gays and lesbians part of the workforce diversity as it is their personal matters.

My point is ...

The idea of creating this blog is actually kind of spontaneous. It happened when I’m conducting presentation for group 5B this afternoon.

To complete the assessment, presentation alone is not enough. They are also required to write a term paper. But, knowing those students, they will resort to the most popular way - the cut-paste method. Can you imagine my disappointment encountering those things? Thus, while assessing their boring presentations, I got this idea - converting paper-writing to blog-writing. It may reduce the tendency of cut-paste risk since whatever they write will be globally read and they need to be responsible when quoting anyone ideas or otherwise they were about to commit the crime of plagiarism. Guess, I'm killing two birds with one stone then.

Ermmm .. don’t tell anyone, but the real reason for this is to save myself from boredom reading their ever copy-paste assignment! And, now I relieved my burden (of boredom) to you, too! Hehehe … evil: evil: evil:

I don’t feel like discussing what the positive effect of doing this. It is up to them to think by their own. But, deep down I do hope that they will benefit something from this kind of exercise. If they get more than I hope, it will be bonus for them.

Point being, it is an effort to make them think out loud what they have inside their minds. They may not actively participate in class for some understandable reasons. So, this is good avenue for them to channel their wandering minds' output. Never mind all the grammatical concerns (my grammar also rusty!). It is their thoughts and ideas that matter. At least they proved that their brain is working.

So … let’s the game begin!
